Udderbot Forum 🍾🤚

I didn't even invent this thing but I am the chief advocate because nobody else is doing it so I guess I will make this website and pump it up until somebody comes around and makes a thing.

  • Traditional tunes - level 1 udderbot brainstorm thread

    Thinking something like

    1. Hot cross buns in Ab major
    2. Mary Had a Little Lamb in A major
    3. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star in Bb major
    4. Do-Re-Mi in B major
    5. Amazing Grace in F major

    And there's Level One!

...or should there be more levels?...

    And I guess Do-Re-Mi isn't exactly traditional.

I know there are scads of other traditional songs, and it would be cool to feature some more obscure ones. Nursery rhymes etc.

  • The Udderbotany Offer

The Art and Science of All Things Udderbot

The udderbot is a new acoustic musical instrument with revolutionary potential, both within the musical world and beyond it.

The most direct way to claim your stake in this exciting project is to join our Udderbotany program.

We have uncovered some crucially helpful techniques out for musicians wanting to incorporate the udderbot seamlessly into their arsenal.

Our body of knowledge looks something like this:

    uddercurric.png

The udderbot was born as a "do-it-yourself" project, but who wants to play in a vacuum? We are here to make awesome music with you—and to help you break through to udderbot mastery.

To take things even further...I believe that no matter what your circumstance, YOU would benefit from learning Udderbotany—the art and science of all things udderbot:

    • Musicians—a new instrument to master.
    • Composers—a fresh timbre to expand your palette.
    • Students—a powerful tool for ear training.
    • Listeners—a guaranteed conversation starter.
    • Music skeptics—something new to passionately dislike!

Udderbotany combines wind instrument essentials with glissando technique gleaned from the fretless family, musical saw, theremin, trombone, string instruments, etc.

Our musical perspective is Western, but also Xenharmonic—proceeding smoothly from the familiar into the unfamiliar.

What's Included in the Udderbotany Offer

    • 🎶 Lessons–Personalized instruction (72 or 144 minutes per month)
    • 🎵 Udderbot Saturdays–Biweekly online jam-class.

Lessons are held via the audio or video conferencing tool of your choice, or in person as feasible.

We believe the best duration commitment for seeing considerable progress on udderbot is 4 months (a "trimester"), so we are also making these offers available:

    • Trimester - $50 off monthly price, plus one udderbot
    • Intensive trimester - $60 off monthly price, plus two udderbots

Ready to join the udderbot revolution? 👉C'mon in!!

(Just kidding. You're already part of the udderbot revolution. It begins with awareness that the world isn't over yet...and it ends when everyone is fed.)

  • Getcher hand-made udderbots!

We are taking orders for handmade udderbots, in the case that you don't want to make your own udderbot and would prefer to receive one that is guaranteed to be constructed to the standards of me the inventor.

Visit https://udderbot.com/checkout.html to order among the three standard sizes. For now, shipping is included, not calculated.

We look forward to being overwhelmed with orders, but also acknowledge that there is charm in the small scale. We are looking into recruiting an Udderbotsmith Guild so that orders can be filled locally around the world to where the demand springs up.

The udderbot has long been spread around through word of mouth. And, the internet is good at burying things. We endure.

I'm working on cultivating an appropriate presence on a wide variety of places, but I don't have a good strategy in place yet.

Also, the Xenharmonic Alliance Discord I'm starting to be more of a presence on: https://discord.gg/9J8k3wdC

Not trying to be invisible, just post too infrequently to be a constant presence anywhere.

    @Marla-G that is a c-r-a-z-y coincidence!

I still cannot believe how good your theremin intonation is. I mean, when you're on, you are ON!

I can't wait 'til we get to some microtonal ear training and how that will open things up.

I would like to hear this melody on udderbot, would you?

Perhaps an arrangement for keyboard and two or three udderbots, where the udderbot parts are of mixed difficulty level but work together to execute some of the more jumpy parts.

  • An Exciting Event - Hark Ye Music Lovers

This is a tremendously packed album that my ensemble, An Exciting Event, did a Kickstarter project to raise funds to record and produce several years ago. By the view count on YouTube, I am coming into the opinion that our release of the album simply did not check all the boxes of what one does when one wants to attract mainstream attention.

Although the album is in the (very niche) genre of "chamber-pop xenharmonic rounds", I feel these tracks have a wide appeal that is not yet realized in its viewership.

I am asking the question to myself: now that this music is years old, what options exist for promoting this wonderful music?

One idea that I have at the moment is to somehow get people to make music videos or lyric videos, i.e. new YouTube content...

Oh, by the way, its relevance to this forum:

    • Apocalyptic udderbot feature on track 1 "Multiverse"
    • Scoopy goofy udderbot feature on track 2 "Hark Ye Music Lovers"
    • Epically satisfying udderbot feature on track 3 "Fetus Float Foot"

I classify these under Adaptions, Renditions, Covers because these rounds were not composed specifically for the udderbot.

  • Joni Mitchell - River

The melody has its moments; still, as a vocal melody, it features some repeated notes that don't hold up well in the instrumental translation.

  • Double-gloving the udderbot?

Thanks for being here, Stephen! I haven't given this a good try. I believe I tried it once with thinner latex or nitrile gloves when I believed they were simply too thin.

To me, there is a sweet spot of glove thickness in terms of the ease of moving it. Too thin and you get this kind of uncanny feeling of the air pressure when playing notes. Too thick and, well, it's like playing any instrument with gloves.

  • What Do You Bring to the Udderbot?

The udderbot is a musical instrument that will reach maturity in your lifetime.

They say every human being is essential. What do You bring to the miracle of udderbot technology?

As for me, Jacob Barton, I bring

    • my prominence as a public figure;
    • a virtuoso spirit;
    • organizational jambitions of grandeur; and
    • an enduring belief in the power of nonsense to heal division.

  • Show me udderbots

Reading chamber music with Tamara P., in Dan & Marji & Gugli's cozy Somerville apartment, ca. 2017.

There is a distinct lack of a better term than to call this udderbot uncircumsized. The glove is shimmied up the bot such that the glove hanging down is suited in volume to the volume of the bot, and simultaneously such that the diameter of the glove is thin enough to secure to the bot without any ripples in the glove.

There are also fancy ways of folding down the extra glove sleeve. You can just invert it down to make a 'skirt', or you can leave it upright and it will cloak the water moving action.

This kind of blue glove has vertical ridges which allow water to travel up and leak. What a pain.

One of the most standard designs in fall 2005 at Rice University's Shepherd School: a Mickey's 40oz bottle, secured with some kind of foil tape intended for air ductwork. Lower register okay I guess, but you had to squeeze a lot of water to get to the higher register. And they leaked like the Dickens.
